Lithuania had been independent for only 12 years when the Soviets occupied the country
in 1940.
The people voted for self-rule in February 1990, and the new democratically elected
parliament declared independence from the U.S.S.R. on March 11, 1990.
Beginning the next month, the Soviet Union began an economic blockade against Lithuania and eventually resorted to violence against people holding vigil around the
capital buildings on January 13, 1991.
Outrage from around the world stopped the attack.
Within a year the influence of perestroika (Mikhail Gorbachev's social reform policies)
and independence movements in the other Soviet states brought about the disintegration of the Soviet Union.
Restoration of Statehood Day is an official holiday in Lithuania.
